The first-ever collaboration between acclaimed contemporary artist Shepard Fairey and the estate of legendary photographer Jim Marshall. In it, Fairey interprets Marshall's iconic photography from the 1960's, including images of Johnny Cash, Cesar Chavez, and Fannie Lee Chaney, with five new works, vividly depicting the humanity behind some of our country's enduring social justice issues: Voting Rights, Mass Incarceration, Workers' Rights, Gun Culture, and Two Americas. The art of American Civics gives a face to these issues to cultivate dialogue and encourage vigorous solutions to problems that have divided the country and eroded the core of the American ideals.

Inspiration doesn't play by many rules. It rides in on the wind and shares your coffee break. Recently during a project, a client and I got to talking about tattoos. She mentioned a tattoo festival being held in the Washington DC area in the coming weeks. There it was, the spark of inspiration. I don't have any tattoos myself but the thought of all those people with their stories essentially written on their bodies was something I felt an immediate pull to photograph. I'm always seeking characters and these were characters I wanted to capture.
EXPERIENCE THE SHOOT >
These portraits are so alive with stories, the backgrounds amplifying the investment in expression. These people had amazingly detailed, as well as personal, tattoo work, it was such a clear commitment of time - and money - on their part. The whole experience turned out to be a blast - talking and working with people from all walks of life bonded by their ink. It's been amazing to spend a few minutes with these people and to make their portraits. I find the end product captivating, mysterious and revealing. But, I still don't have any tattoos.

Tu Ying-Ming, (or English: Ying-Ming Tu) is a visual fine artist who focuses on painting, photography, and documentary films. Born a Gemini - hence his self-given nickname, “Tu-2” (pronounced “Tutu” or “too too”) - to a Hakka family in Taiwan.
After serving in the Taiwan military as a bodyguard to Chiang Kai-Shek, Tu-2 emigrated to America. He was sitting in a cafe with ex-patriots, and they asked him what he wanted to do now that he was in the U.S. His response was “I don’t know. All I do know is I don’t want to be involved in any more wars.” They told him he should become an artist then. So he said “Great idea. I used to draw when I was four and liked it!” When he graduated from UCLA in film and television, his first job was drawing animation for King of the Hill. His Mickey Mao series has shown in Taipei, Los Angeles and Belgium, and was well received by the public and critics alike.
O Street Museum Foundation was proud to have hosted Tu-2 as an artist-in-residence — a brilliant and gifted artist, whose work is an inspiration to all who view it.
Elie Abrahami has spent 1/3 of his life in Persia, Israel and France. He grew up in a strict orthodox Jewish family with 11 children in Persia, where it was against the rules to read or write. The family emigrated to Israel, where he was conscripted into the Army.
Even though Elie was 5'2" he continually got into fights and was thrown in Israel's military prison, where he was taught how to read and write. For a while he was in charge of burning the garbage at the prison, and he started to use the black soot from the flames to draw pictures of Warren Beaty and Marilyn Monroe for cigarettes.
An Israeli government official visiting the prison saw his drawings and asked to meet the artist. They immediately released him from prison and gave him a scholarship to the Avni School of Fine Arts, Tel Aviv, from 1964-1968. Later he attended the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, from 1970-1972. He has been living and working in Paris since the late 1960s.
Abrahami has had numerous one-person exhibitions both in the United States and throughout the world. His works can be found in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and internationally in public and private collections, including the Tel Aviv Museum and the Rothschild Collection, Paris.
Today he speaks 15 languages and has been an artist-in-residence at The O Museum in the Mansion many times.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. They were described as a remarkable feat of engineering with an ascending series of tiered gardens containing a wide variety of trees, shrubs, and vines, resembling a large green mountain constructed of mud bricks.
The Hanging Gardens are the only one of the Seven Wonders for which the location has not been definitively established. Many scholars believe it's mythical.
Imagination and using creativity to help others has always been the most meaningful form of survival. Lewis Carroll is an example of this. He was deaf in one ear, had severe epilepsy, was a recluse, had attention deficit, and yet, he wrote 11 mathematics books and 12 literary books of fantasy — most notably “Alice in Wonderland” and its sequel, “Through The Looking Glass”. Follow us down the rabbit hole to a whole new wondrous world beginning in the front gardens, then wind through over 100 rooms and more than 80 secret doors, all leading you to the Secret Gardens, which will ignite your heart and imagination.

"Just like my paintings, I am faceless. I aspire to create other people’s hope through my art. It’s not about me."
Kallé Siekkinen is a self-taught artist from New Orleans and he paints from the heart. He enjoys painting on recycled materials using house paint, wood stain and stucco and is influenced by his friend and mentor the late, internationally renowned folk artist, Bill Hemmerling.
Most of his subjects are children and many of his paintings in some way represent his own life experiences. His painting are frequently faceless and often times painted jet black, more like a silhouette. Kalle says, “the color black is a mixture of all the colors in the world and is meant to represent everyone. By not having facial details, it allows the viewer to complete the painting by seeing the figures as whomever they choose”.
In his new series, Kalle enjoys using a wide variety of colors in an effort to portray unity among all people and spreading a message of love, diversity, and inclusion and in his own words, “hopes to change the world”.
Kalle’s paintings have sold to collectors abroad and have become a favorite among educators and directors of diversity. Many of his paintings can be seen in t.v. shows and movies such as Queen Sugar, Girls Trip, and C.S.I New Orleans.
Many of his paintings were created at the O Museum in the Mansion in Washington, D.C.
In the early part of the 1800s, a remarkable Frenchman, Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin combined the talents of a skilled clock and watchmaker with those of a master magician to produce a series of clocks that ranked then, and now, as among the most famous and fabled time pieces in history.
To understand and appreciate the clocks, it is good to know a bit about Monsieur Robert-Houdin himself. The son of a Parisian watchmaker, Robert-Houdin became adept at designing and constructing remarkable automata, which he featured in magic shows he presented in and around Paris in the early 1800s.
Robert-Houdin’s reputation as a conjuror gained him substantial notoriety and attracted the attention of the French government when, in 1856, an insurrection arose among tribes attempting to unseat the French colonial government in the Algiers. Believing that Robert-Houdin could command the attention and respect of the people with his magic, the French government appointed him an ambassador and sent him to attempt to quell the uprising. Shortly after his arrival, the new ambassador displayed his magic prowess by inviting a young girl to attempt to lift a small wooden chest that had been set on the ground before him. The child was able to lift the chest readily, which she then replaced on the ground. Robert-Houdin then invited one of the largest, strongest men in the group to join in to attempt to do the same thing, but he warned that he intended to cast a “spell” on the man to deprive him of all his powers. When the man attempted to lift the chest, he could not, try as he might. Yet, the child was able to return and once more list the chest without hesitation.
Robert-Houdin created his miracle with the aid of electromagnetism, a little known phenomenon at the time. Unbeknownst to the audience, he had planted a large electromagnet in the ground before the performance. A hidden assistant could activate the magnet at the appropriate time, and a thick steel plate inside the little chest made it impossible to lift the chest when the magnet was energized.
Robert-Houdin’s apparent miracle deeply impressed the citizenry. But, a peaceful resolution was reached not because of their having been awed by his magic, but because following the performance, Robert-Houdin took them into his confidence and explained the secret, thereby gaining their trust.
Robert-Houdin returned to France a hero and was summoned to Blois (the seat of the French monarchy before Versailles) to be thanked and honored. Today, a monument, museum, and performing center exists in Blois, dedicated to Jean-Eugene Robert-Houdin, who remains France’s most celebrated magician/ambassador.

The world is an ever changing place. And it can be a lonely place. Each one of us is completely different... and yet, in many ways... the same.
We celebrate that each one of us is a hero, an artist, a brain, an athlete... and above all a human being wanting to connect with others.
We erase all boundaries like race, religion and nationality which alienates us from our fellow humans and suppresses our true potential.
By searching for and developing our unique individual narrative we are better able to find our purpose in the world around us.
What is your story, your purpose, your essence? At O Museum in The Mansion we dare you to ask those questions.
Discover your internal super hero...you may be surprised with what you find.
Our new Pop-Culture Experience room celebrates our everyday journey exploring the culture that is all around us defining our times in each moment. It encompasses who we are and helps us to connect — whether it’s the music we listen to, the shows we watch, the art we see or the things we do — we all play a part in creating popular culture.
Thom Wheeler is a Texas native who became one of Houston's foremost contemporary sculptors in the 1970's/80's, creating many large commissions for corporations and architects, commercial and public spaces such as hotel and bank lobbies. He worked in grand scale ranging from 54 feet for bas relief works to 60 feet tall three dimensional pieces. Major works were executed for Banco di Roma, Rome, Italy; The Grand Hotel, Houston; and Ole Miss University, Oxford, Mississippi among many others. Private collectors include Dr. Jonas Salk and country music star Randy Travis.
He's had one-man shows in several cities including San Francisco, Palm Springs, and New Orleans, and been feature or cover artist in several publications including "Southwest Art", "New Mexico Magazine", and "The Houston Chronicle".
His materials are highly polished and textured metals such as brass, copper, and aluminum plate set with ivory, wood, cast glass, stag horn, and stone such as turquoise, malachite and jasper. His tools include the band saw, lathe, drill press, shears, kilns, welding machines, buffers, and sanders.
Thom moved to Taos in 1985 where he began concentrating on smaller pieces with a feeling for the icons of the West and Southwest - gypsy women faces, crosses, bucking broncos, howling coyotes, cow skulls, and the saguaro cacti. As he said, "You could call this my interpretation of Indian jewelry." He actually calls these works "wall jewelry".
Jim Marshall was an American photographer and photojournalist who photographed musicians of the 1960s and 1970s. Earning their trust, he had extended access to his subjects both on and off-stage. Marshall was the official photographer for the Beatles' final concert in San Francisco's Candlestick Park, and he was head-photographer at Woodstock.
Marshall said, “When I'm photographing people, I don't like to give any direction. There are no hair people fussing around, no make-up artists. I'm like a reporter, only with a camera; I react to my subject in their environment, and if it's going well, I get so immersed in it that I become one with the camera.” His iconic photograph of Janis Joplin captures her inner soul, and tugs at your heart. We are so honored that Jim donated many photographs to OM.

French born photographer Sandrine Lee has lived, studied and worked in NYC for over a decade. Via her husband, Will Lee, she has entered the music world and made it her main photographic playground. Sandrine has been an artist-in-residence many times at O Museum.
“I love working with musicians, they are creatively open, daring & most don't take themselves too seriously! It's refreshing in these serious times. I think that in order to take a good portrait, I have to fall in love with my subject a little. For some it's pure admiration of their talent, others their heart and soul and some the whole package. And so, more often then not they become friends and no matter what, they are all dear to me. I feel so lucky to have gotten close to them and hope that their beautiful essence shows through to all, as it does for me.”
— Sandrine Lee

From the seventeenth-century landscapes of golf to today, artists have approached golf from a diverse range of perspectives. American master sculptor Frederick Hart is recognized for creating a body of work — at once traditional in its adherence to the human figure, radical in its sensuality, and innovative in its materials.
Hart gained international stature for his The Creation Sculptures on the west facade of Washington National Cathedral, which include three tympana Ex Nihilo (Out of Nothing), Creation of Day and Creation of Night, and three trumeau figures, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Adam carved in Indiana limestone. The cathedral, located in Washington, D.C. is the sixth largest Gothic cathedral in the world. The works were commissioned in 1974, and dedicated between 1978-84. Author Tom Wolfe commented in The New York Times in January 2000, "(Hart) won what would turn out to be the biggest and most prestigious commission for religious sculpture in America in the twentieth century."
One of the most visited monuments in Washington, D.C. is Hart’s heroic bronze statue Three Soldiers, Vietnam Veterans Memorial, dedicated by President Ronald Reagan in 1984.
Hart pioneered the use of clear acrylic resin to create cast figurative sculptures. He patented the process by which one clear acrylic sculpture was embedded within another. In 1997, Hart presented a unique casting of The Cross of the Millennium to Pope John Paul II in a private ceremony at the Vatican in Rome. When it was unveiled Pope John Paul II called this sculpture “a profound theological statement for our day.”
Frederick Hart was articulate in describing the passion and vision that drove him to create such works of beauty. He said, “I believe that art has a moral responsibility, that it must pursue something higher than itself. Art must be a part of life. It must exist in the domain of the common man. It must be an enriching, ennobling, and vital partner in the public pursuit of civilization. It should be a majestic presence in everyday life just as it was in the past.”
Mr. Hart was an artist-in-residence at The O. In addition to some of our plaster ceilings and angels, you can find many of the pieces that he donated to us including a moquette of Three Soldiers before he passed away in 1999.
Hailed as the architects of the musical revolution of the Sixties, The Beatles are still considered one of the most prolific bands, ever.
Their success was driven by a combination of factors, including songwriting genius and solid group harmonies that were a hallmark of their recordings.
What set them apart was their steadfast belief that they were the best in the world. Their focus, ambition and hard work were devoted to that belief.
The O Street Museum Foundation shares the creative process of this chart topping band through rare recordings, photos and memorabilia.
O Museum's collection of guitars includes a rare Gittler, primitave string guitars, and over 70 signed guitars by music greats including Bruce Springsteen, Bono, Bob Dylan, and Paul McCartney to name a few.
Our collection also includes one-of-a-kind Les Paul Guitars and artifacts. A legendary guitarist, recording artist, scientist and inventor, Les Paul left trademark innovations on everything he touched.
Though he is famous for being a jazz-pop icon, it is his inventions that changed the face of music today. One of pioneers of sound recording, his genius developed revolutionary engineering techniques such as close miking, echo delay, overdubbing and multitracking and the first 8-track tape recorder.
Yet his crowning achievement was driven by his desire to create a stringed instrument that could make electronic sound without distortion. It took almost a decade of work to create his solid bodied instrument - the Gibson Les Paul. Gibson's Les Paul Standard went on to become the most popular of all models of electric guitar. It is Les Paul's pursuit of engineering excellence in the science of sound, as well as his musical genius, that we honor at the O Street Museum Foundation.
You can see a one-of-a-kind, hand painted, personally signed Les Paul guitar when you visit the museuem. In keeping with the whimsy and humor of the OSMF, Les signed his guitar, upside down.

Did you know the Silk Road is neither an actual road nor a single route? The term instead refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than 1,500 years, spreading over 4,200 miles of treacherous mountains and deserts in Asia.
The Silk Road mirrors our quest for magic and discovery of the unknown. It is a journey, much like life, with danger at every turn, filled with hope. It’s about the unexpected, and when you fall down, you get up, over and over again.
Look for the Asian room, filled with things from Tibet, China, Mt. Everest, Japan. Every room -- even the Pop Culture Room and Graceland -- holds a piece of this road, a piece of memory, of times gone by, and hope for the future.
Expecting wild animals? Not at this safari. This euphoric exhibition will be both surprising and joyous, two emotions that you do get when you go on a safari in the wild bush country of Africa. Here you’ll find authentic, fair trade modern African art, artifacts, fashion, home decor jewelry, photographs, books and textiles from all countries on the African continent, sharing their rich culture and heritage. You will be able to touch -- and thus feel -- an authentic leopard warriors outfit from Guyana, with brandished sword and shield, and other handcrafted unique antiques, from the 19th century on. To get to the safari, you will have to find a secret door that takes you past Chucky’s room (enter if you dare) and the St.Andrews room, filled with golf memorabilia.
Step into a whimsical world of Lewis Carroll and other cherished children's book characters to see Alice, The Queen of Hearts, Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Peter Rabbit, and many more iconic creations come to life through a mesmerizing ensemble of meticulously crafted bronze sculptures.
The genesis of this one-in-the-world exhibition traces back to the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London, where Leonards, who created The Mansion and the O Museum in 1980, was captivated by a remarkable collection of handmade bronze sculptures.
The Robert James Studio, which created the exhibit, is a three-time, five-star winner at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, considered the pinnacle of horticultural excellence in the UK.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
James Coplestone has been making art works of various kinds for nearly 30 years.
Living in the rolling hills of West Dorset, England, his sculptures — based upon his love of literature are taking shape. Classic illustrations modeled in clay and then turned into bronze.
He uses old tools and finger prints to press, move and model clay into position to capture the breath of the character... as if they have momentarily stepped out of the book into the three dimensional world.
Artifacts from the supergroup that featured Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Roy Orbison

His first musical success was as a fourteen-year-old guitarist in The Royal Teens, best known for their song "Short Shorts". In 1960, he joined the songwriting team of Bob Brass and Irwin Levine, and wrote "This Diamond Ring", which became a hit for Gary Lewis and the Playboys.
He performed with Bob Dylan in concert in 1965, and in the recording studio in 1965 and 1966, including playing Hammond organ with Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965. Kooper also created the Hammond organ riffs on Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone". It was in those recording sessions that Kooper met and befriended Mike Bloomfield, whose guitar-playing he admired. Kooper played organ with Dylan during his 1981 world tour, and just recently produced his latest releases.
Kooper joined The Blues Project as their keyboardist in 1965, leaving the band shortly before their gig at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. He formed Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1967. He recorded Super Session with Bloomfield and Stephen Stills in 1968.
Legendary singer/songwriter Kooper has played on hundreds of records, including ones by The Rolling Stones, B. B. King, The Who, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Alice Cooper, and Cream. After moving to Atlanta in 1972, the King of Sothern Rock/Pop, he discovered the band Lynyrd Skynyrd, and produced and performed on their first three albums, including the single "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird". Kooper also wrote the score for the TV series Crime Story and the film The Landlord and has also written music for several made-for-television movies. Featuring
"Guitar Man" Warner Williams
1:00pm - 4pm
Guitarist and songster Warner Williams is one of the greatest unsung heroes of the Piedmont blues—an Eastern seaboard style that incorporates fiddle tunes, ballads, country and popular songs, ragtime, and gospel.
The son of a cement finisher and a house cleaner, Williams was one of 11 children raised in a musical family. He was a garbage collector in Maryland for nearly 60 years.
By his early teens, Williams was hopping streetcars to get to the District, often paying his fare with a song. He’d wander through the city, playing tunes for change until police shooed him away.
At 22, he won an on-air talent show on WWDC hosted by Jackson Lowe, a white DJ who was an early champion of R&B. Williams started playing juke joints and house hops around the Maryland suburbs soon after.
When Williams married his wife, Karoline, and started his family, he continued to play on weeknights and weekends. All the blues legends tried to get him to go on tour with them — B.B. King the most notable. But he was afraid he would die on a tour bus, and he did not want to leave his family, so he always said no, only playing with them when they came to D.C.
Williams’s major-label debut, “Blues Highway,†was released in 2004 and helped bring him to wider attention. Summerour has also helped guide Williams to bigger gigs at Wolf Trap, the National Folk Festival and other spots in recent years, but Williams is still more likely to be found playing a house party or a small club or busking on a street corner.

At the age of 88 Mr. Williams plays the fourth Sunday of each month at O Museum in The Mansion.
Boston native Bob Margolin joined legendary bluesman Muddy Waters on the road and in the studio in 1973, playing festivals and clubs around the U.S., Canada, and Europe. In 1975, they recorded Grammy Award-winning "Muddy Waters Woodstock Album", Muddy’s last for Chess Records, which featured Paul Butterfield, and Levon Helm and Garth Hudson from The Band. In '76, Muddy brought Margolin with him to San Francisco to perform at The Band’s "Last Waltz" concert. Martin Scorsese filmed the concert for the classic film. Margolin also played on the four albums that Muddy recorded for Blue Sky Records, which were produced by Johnny Winter, and with Johnny on his Nothin' But The Blues album. Three of those albums won Grammy Awards.
Margolin left Muddy’s band in 1980 and went on to appear at the 1984 New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, joining The Fabulous Thunderbirds for a tribute to Muddy Waters (with Etta James singing, and Taj Mahal and James Cotton opening.) He formed his own band and opened shows for Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Thorogood, Johnny Winter, and The T-Birds.
Throughout his career he's recorded many solo albums including;"The Old School" and "Chicago Blues" for Powerhouse Records, "Down In The Alley", "My Blues and My Guitar", and "Up & In" for Alligator records, "Hold Me To It" on Blind Pig Records, "The Bob Margolin All-Star Blues Jam" for Telarc, and "In North Carolina" and "Blues Around The World" for his own VizzTone Label Group (formed in 2007).
In 1994, Margolin joined The Muddy Waters Tribute Band, and went on a national tour with B.B. King, Dr. John, and Little Feat. In December of that year, they cut an album featuring the band and special guests from the Rock and Blues worlds. “You Gonna Miss Me, a Tribute to Muddy Waters” on Telarc Records was nominated for a Grammy Award in ‘96.
Bob Margolin has played on several Grammy-winning recordings, won numerous W.C. Handy/Blues Music Awards and is a KBA Award recipient for Journalism. [In the early ’90s, Margolin began a second career as a music writer. In 2011, he released an eBook featuring the best of his writing — “Steady Rollin’ – Blues Stories, Snapshots, (Intentional) Blues Fiction.] He’s produced albums for numerous artists including Muddy’s son Big Bill Morganfield, Candye Kane, Pinetop Perkins, Mac Arnold, Ann Rabson and produced and consulted on reissues of Muddy Waters’ recordings for the Blue Sky Label for Sony/Legacy.
Singer, songwriter, poet, actor Bobby Bridger has performed on PBS's Austin City Limits & American Experience, C-Span/Booknotes, ABC's Good Morning America, on CNN, A & E, National Public Radio, and the Australian Broadcasting Company.

Appearing on albums by The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, John Lennon Lynyrd Skynrd, and so many others. With a career spanning decades, Bobby toured from 1956 until his death in 2014, delighting audiences across the country with his sultry but still rock and roll style of saxophone.
From a young age, Bobby had music in his blood, starting his first tour with Bobby Vee and Buddy Holly when he was just 15 years old. His career took off from there, meeting the Rolling Stones, who he would later go on to record and tour with, in 1964. It is also rumored that Bobby participated in the last ever recording session between Paul McCartney and John Lennon in 1974 (though he could not remember if he participated in the session).
In his memoir, Every Night's a Saturday Night, saxophonist Bobby Keys, known as "Mr. Brown Sugar", tells many tales of an over-the-top rock 'n' roll life in his own inimitable voice.

"There's one chance meeting that will stay with me the rest of my life, and really captures the essence of The Mansion.
"Within a few months of moving in, I discovered a musician singing in a thrift store and asked him to perform at The Mansion that night. Months later, he came and asked if he could sleep here for the winter.
"For the three winters Cordell lived here, he went from living on the street to learning to play the piano at The Mansion, to performing for $2500 dollars a night as at a local hotel. "If Cordell was alive today, he would have performed "Oh Holy Night" on The Mansion's anniversary album, as he incorporated the soul of The Mansion into his vocal arrangements, never singing a song the same way twice.
"Cordell (he needed no last name) performed every Christmas Eve, until his passing. But we continue to smile with his memory knowing that Cordell's soul truly is resting with God."

After his time in the army, he moved to Chicago in hopes of becoming a professional comedian, and became the master of ceremonies at the Roberts Show Club in 1959.
His endeavors landed him the number 82 spot on Comedy Central's 100 Greatest Stand-ups of all-time.
In addition to his comedy career, Dick was an established civil rights activist, attending Freedom Day in Selma, Alabama in 1963 and running for president with the Freedom and Peace Party in 1968. This unsuccessful bid for president led him to write a book, Write Me In, which told the story of his campaign. ABOUT JEFF PLANKENHORN
Jeff Plankenhorn plays a soulful, distinctly Austin brand of roots rock that, over the past several years, has gained him a devoted national following and a seat among the very best contemporary Americana songwriters. His confident, catchy-as-hell fourth studio album, Sleeping Dogs was released to rave reviews (Rolling Stone Country, the Boot, Twangville, among others) and spent a good chunk of 2018 on the Roots Rock and Americana radio charts (#5 and #44). The four-piece band that bears his name has become a favorite on the festival circuit, scoring spots at Old Settlers Music Festival, Kerrville Folk Festival, Telluride Americana Music Festival, and Austin's annual New Years Eve blowout at Auditorium Shores.
Well before he started rocking festival stages as a solo artist, Plankenhorn was already in the musical DNA of his adopted home of Austin, Texas. His bluesy, slide-driven guitar style was born out of jam sessions, residencies and house shows played for local audiences eager for the electricity and edge-of-your-seat musicianship that makes Austin the live music capital of the world. "In Austin," he says, "few players rehearse. You show up and you play, for better or for worse."
That freewheeling philosophy, and the disciplined songwriting craft that underpins it, is the result of Plankenhorn's almost ten-year run as a member of the Resentments, a supergroup of sorts that hosts one of the longest running residencies in Austin.
Plankenhorn is a magnet for diverse ideas and collaborators, and his genius is in bringing them together. Sleeping Dogs merges styles effortlessly, juxtaposing sweet-hearted anthems like "Love is Love" (a response to the Pulse nightclub shooting) against ominous, weathered tunes like "Tooth & Nail", which he co-wrote with Ray Wilie Hubbard. Several of the album's standouts are the result of collabs with Americana royalty, including "Holy Lighting", which features a duet with Patty Griffin. Tying it all together is a big-heartedness that speaks to a worldly approach to Americana music.
Today, he lives half the year now living with his wife on Vancouver Island, Canada, where he spends idyllic days writing and playing with their dogs. The other half he spends in Austin, where he remains in demand as a session player, cowriter, and producer. The success of his last two albums have brought international interest in his music, and full tours of Europe and Canada are in the works.

"Johnny Nicholas is one of the best bluesmen ever, black or white." - Stephen Bruton
Johnny was born in Rhode Island. When he was in his early teens his heart was already set on being a musician and he was playing with various blues greats across Chicago, Ann Arbor and Detroit. His travels to Louisiana exposed him to Cajun music. He then moved to Austin (1978-1980) mixing western swing with jump blues as a member of Asleep at the Wheel.
Johnny says he spent the 70s traveling because, "I was in the river, man, and I was just flowing with it, you know?" Despite this flow, he and his wife fell in love with the Texas Hill Country in the early 80s, where they have resided ever since. Together, they opened the renowned Hill Top Cafe in Fredericksburg, Texas and raised 3 sons.
In 1991, Johnny returned his focus to music, working with Johnny Shines and Snooky Pryor on their album, Back to the Country. Despite taking inspiration and being trained by notable blues artists, something about the term "bluesman" doesn't completely match the sound that Johnny creates. Marcia Ball calls him an "innovative traditionalist", which despite sounding like an oxymoron, gives Johnny a point of direction. He incorporates blues sound with Cajun, swing, folk, and barrelhouse rock 'n' roll to create what he calls "a rich gumbo" of Americana. His most recent album, Fresh Air, “showcases the hard-earned wisdom of a man determined to use his time left on earth not just to revel in the blues, but to plant seeds of kindness, humility and love. His end goal, as revealed in the sweet, spirit-lifting acoustic sigh of the closing title track, is to ultimately help listeners relearn how to just breathe in the thick of a materialistic and distraction-filled world."An Austin Texas Music Hall of Fame Inductee, singer songwriter Jon has a knack has for creating raw, gutsy music that's easy to relate to.
He's most well-known for his solo work, including albums such as "Escape from Monster Island", "Full" and "Hooray for the Moon", which have gained critical acclaim. Jon is also known for his work with The Skunks, Austin's first punk band and the True Believers, a band with a unique fusion of alternative country and punk sounds lovingly referred to as "Cowpunk".
Jon's work earned him numerous accolades, including being inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame on 3 different occasions, as a solo artist (2000), as a member of The Skunks (2008) and as a member of True Believers (2009).
Joining Owen are legendary Los Angeles session musicians Leland Sklar (bass), and British-based master percussionist Pedro Segundo.
For most artists, an album of cover songs is an idea of last resort, a Hail Mary pass when one’s creativity has stalled out or there’s a contract to be fulfilled...
But most artists aren't Judith Owen.
This firebrand singer-songwriter and pianist is currently riding the wave of a tremendous couple of years. Her previous album Somebody's Child was adored by critics around the world - The Sunday Times UK chose it as one of the best records of 2016 and Analog Planet said that it "sparkles with Owen’s witty energy" and noting that "the songs will stay with you long after the record ends".
Her live performances, whether as a headliner or as the handpicked opening act for Bryan Ferry's recent tours of Europe and North America, have been wowing listeners and gaining fans like fellow artist Jackson Browne, who said of Owen’s onstage prowess: "It’s a masterclass on how a show should be done."
So with all that wind in her sails, why then turn to the music of others for her forthcoming album redisCOVERed? For Owen, it is something of a gift for her fans, both old and new.
"Over the years, so many people, whether it be [film producer] Nick Wechsler or audience members who hear the covers I’ve done over the years, have always had the question, 'Why don’t you make a collection of these things because they’re so unique and unusual?'" Owen says. "And I had to really ask myself why I do these covers and why they bring me so much pleasure."
Those questions are easy to answer once you listen to redisCOVERed. As she has done since her earliest days attempting to plunk out the music of Mozart and Debussy on her family's piano to her days playing four hour sets in piano bars fulfilling customer requests, Owen makes these songs her own. She molds the familiar melodies and lyrics to contemporary pop hits and longtime favorites to her unmistakable voice and style.
"The line I always use is, ‘I don’t do karaoke.’ I don’t perform or sing music unless it means something to me,†Owen insists. “I knew I had to make these songs matter to me, to have my truth in them.â€
It doesn’t take much digging to find the deeper layers of meaning in her song choices and her performances on redisCOVERed. Look within even the seemingly silliest selection and you’ll find a big piece of Owen's heart waiting for you.
For some songs, the connections are fairly easy to make. She pays loving homage to one of her biggest influences Joni Mitchell, recording a pair of the Laurel Canyon legend’s compositions: "Cherokee Louise" and "Ladies Man." They’re somewhat surprising choices, as they come from Mitchell’s post-'70s heyday when her commercial star had faded somewhat yet she was still producing incredible work. Work that resonated loudly with Owen.
"There’s a line in 'Ladies Man' where she sings, 'Why do you keep trying to make a man out of me?'" Owen says. "And I really relate to that because when I met Joni, I realized I knew exactly what she was talking about. She is someone who is one of the guys. She does not lead with her sexuality. She leads with her musicianship and her abilities. The most important thing is to be respected on stage and in the studio. Yet, there are times when I've wished that the person I was working with could perhaps notice that I was a woman. She nailed it in that one line and it really touched me."
Owen had a similar relationship within the lyrics and mood of "Black Hole Sun," one of the breakout hits for grunge icons Soundgarden that she performs with such thoughtfulness and verve on redisCOVERed, in tribute to the late Chris Cornell and to the message she found within the song.
"When I heard it, I thought, 'This is the best song about depression and being in the darkness that I’ve ever heard,'" she says. "You couldn’t make that song darker, but what you can do is bring this kind of pompous kind of perkiness to it, which always how I feel when I have my game face on. Like most people who struggle with the 'black dog,' they have their daytime face that they go out with so you won't see what's going on inside. So I liked the idea of doing this almost skipping, 'Take Five' version of it, which belies the words."
Her biggest test, though, was seeing herself within the very modern hip-hop of Drake's "Hotline Bling."
"I said to Harry [Shearer, her husband], 'Choose the most extreme thing; something contemporary that you would think I could not relate to,'" she says. "But of course I can because I've been in that place where I was constantly waiting for the phone call that would come from the guy who would call me only when there was no one better to be around. That song became more of a torch song. That's absolutely a woman's song if ever there was one."
Owen's arrangements breathe fresh life into these familiar songs recording with Grammy® winning co-producer/mixer/engineer David Bianco (Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Meghan Trainor) whilst surrounding herself with some sharp musical talent. She’s joined throughout this album by legendary bassist Leland Sklar (James Taylor, Carole King, Leonard Cohen) and master percussionist Pedro Segundo, both key members of Judith's recent live band.
You'll also find contributions from the likes of Paul Beard (Bryan Ferry, James Blunt), George Shelby (Phil Collins, Bette Midler), Snarky Puppy member Michael 'Maz' Maher, Grammy® winning jazz trumpeter Nicholas Payton and her dazzling London string players; longtime cellist collaborator Gabriella Swallow and violinist Lizzie Ball (Nigel Kennedy, Jeff Beck).
What every track on redisCOVERed--be it a pop chestnut from Grease ("Summer Nights"), a modern chart hit (Ed Sheeran’s "Shape Of You" or Justin Timberlake "Can’t Stop The Feeling"), an icon (Beatles "Blackbird" or Deep Purple "Smoke On The Water") or evergreen 70s dance floor classics (Donna Summer's "Hot Stuff" or Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music") -- reveals is that what we bring to a song that we love is what ultimately defines its truth.Â
"These are great songs that I've deconstructed and re-claimed or simply found my life and new meaning in the lyrics"
"What started as a "Dream A Little Dream Of Me' request sung for a good friend’s wedding, this version turned into one more akin to Sinatra"s "One More For The Road" -- the joy of first love was exchanged turned in a 'not into you' and the perfect bookend for the album starting with "Hotline Bling" and seemingly perfect ending for the album"
"This is the thing about music," Owen avers, "We always get a different read from the same song. A song means so many different things to different people, and they're all true. It's what it means to you that matters."
"The kind of wailing folk-jazz voice that slices away surfaces to touch the vulnerable emotional nerve endings and leave you quivering." -- The New York Times

Chapel Hill's indie Americana quartet Mipso are influenced by the contradiction of their progressive home and the surrounding rural southern landscapes. Currently celebrating the release of their new album Coming Down The Mountain (April 7, 2017), Mipso ventures further than ever from their string-band pedigree to discover a broader Americana - where classic folk-rock and modern alt-country sounds mingle easily with Appalachian tradition. Mipso's music is lush and forward moving, with words that sear and salve in turn.
Hailed as "hewing surprisingly close to gospel and folk while still sounding modern and secular." (Acoustic Guitar), Mipso brings a distinctly unique sound- full of wistful beauty, hopeful undercurrents, and panoramic soundscapes.

proudly presents Nora Jane Struthers in a Duo Acoustic Show with Joe Overton.
Nora's latest release "Champion" was listed among the best albums of the year in No Depression Staff Picks, NPR's list of "Most Underheard Albums of The Year" and Rolling Stone’s “12 Great Country, Americana Albums You Probably Didn’t Hear” in 2017.
Nora Jane Struthers has written "some of the most quietly powerful narratives within the new wave of Americana artists," says Ann Powers of NPR Music. The songs that last decades and weave themselves into the fabric of listeners' lives are usually the
ones in which an artist lays her soul bare for the world to hear.
Struthers has built her career on these kinds of songs. There’s an honesty and energy to Nora Jane’s stage presence; a vulnerability that is part and parcel of great artistry. In one moment, she joyfully leads the audience in a dance party … in the next, she lays her soul bare for the world to hear.

Native Ohioans Detweiler and Bergquist launched Over the Rhine in the spring of 1989, naming the ensemble after the historic, bohemian Cincinnati neighborhood Over-the-Rhine, where they lived, wrote, and recorded together. They quickly struck a chord with listeners, and had a solid local following by the time they launched their first two albums, Till We Have Faces (1991) and Patience (1992).
Over the next two decades, Over the Rhine continued to build a musically and emotionally potent catalogue. Over the Rhine’s 15th studio album Love & Revelation marks the duo’s 30th continuous year of writing, recording and touring together. In that time, singer songwriters/multi-instrumentalists Karin Bergquist and Linford Detweiler (who’ve been married for 22 years) have built a vivid, emotionally-charged body of work that has won them a deeply devoted following and critical acclaim.
They have shared the stage with Bob Dylan, John Prine, Adrian Belew, Squeeze, Ani DiFranco, My Morning Jacket, Hem, and toured as "adjunct" members of Cowboy Junkies.
Paul Williams is an Oscar, Grammy, Golden Globe-winning songwriter. Williams is recognized as one of America's most prolific and gifted lyricists and composers. A Hall of Fame songwriter and recipient of the 2004 National Music Publishers President's Award, Williams' standards have been recorded by such diverse musical icons as Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Ray Charles, David Bowie, Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, Johynny Mathis, Bing Crosby, The Carpenters, Luther Vandross, Mel Torme and Diana Ross. "The Rainbow Connection", from the children's classic The Muppet Movie, is one of two Paul Williams songs that grace the American Film Institute's list of top movie songs of all time; the second, "Evergreen" is from the award-wining Streisand/Kristofferson remake of A Star is Born.
Although most people first came to know Mr. Williams as one of Johnny Carson's recurring favorites on The Tonight Show, or as an actor in dozens of films, television comedies and dramas, it is his musical legacy that continues to inspire. "We've Only Just Begun", "Rainy Days and Mondays", "You and Me Against the World" and "An Old Fashioned Love Song" all remain pop classics.
Privately a devoted father and publicly lauded for his work as a songwriter, performer, actor and humanitarian, he predicts he'll be remembered for playing Little Enos in the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy and for his lyrics to "The Love Boat" theme. In April 2009, Paul Williams was elected the new President and Chairman of ASCAP.

Paul Williams is one of the most beloved and respected music creators in the world. His songs and scores have received six Oscar, nine Grammy, six Golden Globe and two Emmy nominations. "The Rainbow Connection," from The Muppet Movie, is one of two of Williams' songs that grace AFI's List of Top Movie Songs of All Time. More recent honors include album of the year Grammy, as co-writer and featured artist on Daft Punk's Random Access Memories; and a World Soundtrack Award with Gustavo Santaolalla for their work on The Book of Life.
Paul is also passionate about recovery and works tirelessly to destigmatize alcoholism and addiction. His humorous observations of life, love, and creativity has been shared in a best-selling book entitled Gratitude and Trust: Six Affirmations That Will Change Your Life which was featured on Oprah's Super Soul Sunday.
While publicly lauded for his work as a songwriter, author and actor, most recently for his recurring role with Billy Bob Thornton in Goliath, Paul predicts he'll be remembered for playing Little Enos in the Smokey and the Bandit trilogy and for his lyrics to "The Love Boat" theme. However, it is the lyrics from Bugsy Malone that aptly sum up his philosophy: "You give a little love and it all comes back to you; You're gonna' be remembered for the things that you say and do". Michael Brunnock
Singer - Song Writer
In this special St. Patrick’s Day solo show Michael will bring music old and young from Ireland, sharing family songs and stories handed down with a natural wit and sincerity.
Michael has an extraordinary voice, whose songs mine the profound. It is not surprising that David Byrne cast him to sing the role of an Irish musician on the brink of success whose voice guides Sean Penn through an emotional journey of self-discovery in This Must Be the Place. The score by Byrne with lyrics by Will Oldham (Bonnie Prince Billy) called for a distinctive vocalist, which Brunnock is. Michael has won an Italian Oscar (Di Donatello) for the best original song If it falls and has written and performed music for Italian movies Noi 4 and Manuel.
Brunnock’s roots are deeply evident on the acclaimed The Orchard, a collection of gorgeously crafted songs featuring guest performances from Glen Hansard, Julia Stone, Ari Hest and Joe Sumner.
Michael has collaborated with acclaimed Irish playwright Deirdre Kinahan (Solas Nua: Wild Sky and The Frederick Douglass Project), on a new musical project called Ettie, a reimagining of the story of Ettie Steinberg, one of the very few Irish citizens to die in the Holocaust. He is currently finishing a song cycle based on poetry and letters by Sir Roger Casement.

Science is about facts, and scientific fact is at the center of climatologist Dr. Ben Santer's work on global warming. The esteemed scientist from Lawrence Livermore Labs will join Milwaukee-based filmmaker Chip Duncan and global health expert Dr. Hernando Garzon from California's Kaiser Permanente for an evening of discussion about receding glaciers, global climate modeling and the long term health consequences facing a warming world.
Using personal stories, long term study and decades of documentation and participation, Santer, Duncan and Garzon have teamed up to bring their climate story to audiences across the U.S. Duncan begins the evening with a discussion of his documentation of North America's iciest landscapes going back to 1991. Santer tells the story of a warming climate through computer modeling and satellite imagery accented by personal stories that begin with his participation in the 1995 report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This report reached the historic conclusion that "the balance of evidence suggests a discernible human influence on global climate." Considered one of the world's leading experts on global disaster response during the past generation, Garzon weaves a personal story that begins with his work navigating crises like 9/11, the Haitian earthquake and West Africa's Ebola crisis while addressing a noticeable shift to climate-related disasters such as Puerto Rico, New Orleans, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Ayerwaddy Delta region of Burma.

Constanten wrote orchestral pieces as a child. He became the 7th member of the Grateful Dead in 1968, recording the band's second album, Anthem of the Sun, while on weekend leave from the Air Force. "It was like a magic carpet ride that was there for me to step on," he says. "I would have been a fool not to." He was inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
He stated his personal philosophy in a 2002 interview, "I know of no path that is better marked than the study of music. Maybe I just think so because it's the path I'm on. There's the old question "How come there's never enough time to do it right, but there's always enough time to do it over." Well, here's an answer. Settle down. Do it right. However long it takes. That's the direct route to the fast lane!"
He practices what he preaches, and after time in Grateful Dead, Constanten turned to academics and held a Creative Associate fellowship in composition at SUNY Buffalo at their music-oriented Center of the Creative and Performing Arts from 1974-75. In 1986, he was an artist in residence at Harvard University. He also taught at the San Francisco Art Institute.
Constanten also began to tour as a solo pianist, and was the house pianist for the radio program, West Coast Weekend, from 1986 to 1993. He also plays with a number of Grateful Dead tribute bands, including Jazz is Dead, a band which covers classic Dead songs with jazz influences.
Constanten has been an artist in residence off and on at the Mansion for the past 15 years! Keep an eye out for his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Award when you tour the Mansion.
"Every year the mounting landfill of new releases... yields a few unexpected gems, and Tom Freund is one of them."
- The New York Times
"Truly unique and absolutely brilliant."
- All Music Guide
"I get shivers down my spine on almost every tune. Along with Lucinda Williams, Freund is the best singer/songwriter operating today."
- Graham Parker
Tom's musical career began in 1992 with the release of his duo's self-titled album, Pleasure and Pain. After this, Tom began playing bass with The Silos and launched his solo career with the album, North American Long Weekend, in 1998. Following the success of this album, Tom became a favorite on NPR's Weekend Edition.
Tom's unique singer-songwriter style incorporates his previous experience writing across several genres, from pop to folk to jazz to rock and roll and beyond. His latest album, Two Moons, is unlike anything he's ever created before, blending confidence with his own life experience to create an album that is sure to impress.
Tommy Shaw is a guitar player and singer-songwriter, best known as a member of STYX. Some of his own material including "Fooling Yourself", "Blue Collar Man" and "Too Much Time On My Hands" contributed to the success of the group that he ultimately recorded over ten albums with. In addition to his work with STYX he has toured with other bands such as the Damn Yankees and as a solo artist.
Tommy describes his first gig as when, at age 5, his grandfather gave him a nickel in exchange for singing a song. His parents gave him his first guitar at age 10. By age 14, he had joined his first band, The Vagabonds, and hasn't stopped making music since!
His discography alone is impressive, having recorded 19 albums with STYX, 6 solo albums, 2 albums with Damn Yankees and 2 albums with Shaw/Blades. Of these, several went platinum, in part due to Tommy's efforts. He travelled the country and personally asked radio stations to play the band's single "Come Sail Away", which led to the band's album The Grand Illusion going platinum in 1977. Damn Yankees' second album, Don't Tread, also went platinum.
Tommy was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame in his hometown of Montgomery in February of 2008.
The brainchild of Johnny Irion, U.S. Elevator's music is filled with loving and wily winks at the visionary forces of the 1960s and 1970s - The Beatles, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Gram Parsons, and The Hollies, for starters - and is at the same time thoroughly original, contemporary, and richly melodic.

(Coke commercial lyrics)
Privately a devoted father and publicly lauded for his work as a songwriter, performer, actor and humanitarian, he is also President and Chairman of ASCAP.

Guitarist and songster Warner Williams is one of the greatest unsung
heroes of the Piedmont blues—an Eastern seaboard style that incorporates
fiddle tunes, ballads, country and popular songs, ragtime, and gospel.
The
son of a cement finisher and a house cleaner, Williams was one of 11
children raised in a musical family. He was a garbage collector in
Maryland for nearly 60 years.
By his early teens, Williams was
hopping streetcars to get to the District, often paying his fare with a
song. He’d wander through the city, playing tunes for change until
police shooed him away.
At 22, he won an on-air talent show on
WWDC hosted by Jackson Lowe, a white DJ who was an early champion of
R&B. Williams started playing juke joints and house hops around the
Maryland suburbs soon after.
When Williams married his wife,
Karoline, and started his family, he continued to play on weeknights and
weekends. All the blues legends tried to get him to go on tour with
them — B.B. King the most notable. But he was afraid he would die on a
tour bus, and he did not want to leave his family, so he always said no,
only playing with them when they came to D.C.
Williams’s
major-label debut, “Blues Highway,†was released in 2004 and helped
bring him to wider attention. Summerour has also helped guide Williams
to bigger gigs at Wolf Trap, the National Folk Festival and other spots
in recent years, but Williams is still more likely to be found playing a
house party or a small club or busking on a street corner.
At the age of 88 Mr. Williams plays the fourth Sunday of each month at O Museum in The Mansion.
Grammy Award-winning Will Lee delivers more than just fine music; his unique combination of talent and love of entertaining provides good feelings for all who see him perform. He's played with B.J. Thomas, Bette Midler, Ricky Martin, George Benson, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Mick Jagger, Billy Joel, Mariah Carey and many more. You can see him every week night playing bass with Paul Shaffer and the "CBS Orchestra" on the "Late Show with David Letterman".
Yusuf Islam, commonly known by his former stage name, Cat Stevens, is a British singer-songwriter. His 1967 debut album's titular song, "Matthew & Son" charted at #2 on the UK's Singles Chart. His later albums Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser and the Firecat, both went triple platinum in the US. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.
Yusuf started his career playing songs in London pubs and coffee houses. He was discovered at age 18, recorded his first album, Matthew and Son, in 1966. He spent the next two years touring with artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Engelbert Humperdnick. He wrote "The First Cut is the Deepest" for his second album, and though it was not a huge success for him, it became an international success when covered by several artists including Sheryl Crow. Nearly 40 years after he first wrote it, the song earned back to back ASCAP "Songwriter of the Year" awards, in 2005 and 2006.
Chip Duncan, Award Winning Filmmaker & Photographer talks about belonging, finding your place and the importance of inclusion at O Museum.
The son of a cement finisher and a house cleaner, Williams was one of 11 children raised in a musical family. He picked up the guitar at 4, spurred on by his father, who also taught music and played the fiddle.
Warner Williams has written over 1,000 songs - and has played with bluesmen Blind Boy Fuller, Lightnin' Hopkins, Muddy Waters and B.B. King, as well as country artists Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb and Gene Autry. Mr. Williams can slide between styles as easily as the arm of an old jukebox snaps a fresh 45 on the spindle. Piedmont blues flows into hillbilly. R&B segues to bluegrass. Vintage rock gives way to gospel. His fingers are nimble but as unhurried as a country ramble. His voice is warm and weathered. At the age of 88, he was honored at the Kennedy Center.
Cade writes, "People come to The Mansion and O Museum in so many ways - and tell stories you likely wouldn't believe. As a DC resident, I know these tales as a part of the character of this city. I once thought "if I could get one of my photographs on those walls..." and today, I have a whole exhibition focused on the storytelling of tattoos: Character, Not Characters.
"The tagline of the Mansion on O begins with "everything is possible." With my first exhibition of photographs hanging in the galleries of this most iconic of institutions, I am inclined to agree.
"The other part of OM's tagline is "Dare to be different." In my photography, I'm looking for the stories and characters that reveal themselves when you look at things differently. These tattoo portraits are a closer look at stories told through ink - mysterious and intimate at once.
"If you're going to do something, you might as well do it right. Having my work, my first exhibition, at the O Museum in DC is about as right as I can imagine."
Born in Texas in 1946, Edwards was drafted by the military, wounded in a land mine explosion in the Vietnam War and was awarded a Bronze Star. He was well known in local and national circles as a "fixer" who worked on many elections, including Senator Robert F. Kennedy (he was by his side when he was assassinated). While on the Board of the NAACP, he headed up the Hollywood branch and sued The Arsenio Hall Show for discrimination (he employed over 200 people, and none were African American). 100% of this lawsuit proceeds went to the NAACP. He then created the Black Image Awards, which he produced with Roone Arledge at ABC for 2 years. Again, 100% of the money he received from ABC went to the NAACP. Never his own pockets.
As he struggled to recover from AIDS-related illnesses in 1984 Willis was visited by Mrs. Rosa Parks. She compelled him, while dying in the hospital to get well ? to help her. Five days later he left the hospital, with a mission to serve her for the rest of her life. We called him Mr. Willis. When he stayed with us (which was a lot) he taught us so much about humility and service to others. Brother Willis served on our Museum Board from 1990-2012, when he left to serve God in more ways, in Heaven. There is not one day that goes by without stories and thoughts about Mr. Willis, our brother.
Discovered by the founder while he was singing in a thrift store in D.C., Cordell was invited to perform at O Street that night. Months later, he came and asked if he could stay for the winter. For three winters Cordell lived at O Street - he went from living on the streets to learning to play the piano at The Mansion, to performing for $2,500 a night at a local hotel.
As an interesting side note, the piano Cordell learned to play while he lived at The Mansion was later sold to sculptor Frederick Hart, who created the Vietnam Memorial Sculpture of three soldiers on The Mall in Washington, D.C. (you can see a prototype of it in the museum collection) and the sculpture on the fa?ade of the National Cathedral.
Creativity and artistry come together at O Street, sometimes in ways that we cannot fathom.
The why behind the mirrors. My mirrors represent my journey of self-acceptance. Looking into a mirror was a punishing experience. I never saw anything good.
From addiction to recovery from self-loathing to self-acceptance to being SPLENDIDLY IMPERFECT. I transform the mirrors into something that could only make me smile, which has changed the way I look at myself today. It has been... and still is... a journey.
I?m not where I was... I?m not where I am going... but I am on my way!
Korean War veteran Davie Heck (the soul of The Mansion) worked for the Maryland Parks Department after completing his military service. Transitioning from military to civilian life can be a challenge and Davie fell on hard times, relying on alcohol and drugs to get him through. When he was arrested for passing out in his car on the highway, he was put in jail and then sent to a halfway house, where a kind judge suggested to his parole officer he come here to work during the day. Wanting to help himself, at the end of his service there, he reached out to us for a place to stay, at no cost.
Davie lived here for 25 years before he passed. His warm smile and genuine personality became a mainstay and beacon of hope for all those who came to The Mansion and O Museum.
Davie entered our life, and became our saving grace.
Nothing in life is random. There is a reason for everything. It's all about saying yes to what God brings you.
Miracles surround us if we don't shut our hearts. It all starts, with the power within.
